Four and Five-Star Hotels Across the UK

Looking for a four or five-star stay? Explore manor-house hotels, country retreats, lodge-style hotels and city or town-centre stays across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This page helps you check ratings, location, facilities and booking terms before choosing. Sixpence Support UK's information is free; accommodation and extras are charged by providers.

Four and five-star only
Use a current recognised accommodation rating rather than a guest-review score or a provider's vague claim of luxury. Check the rating organisation, property name and accommodation category. A four-star self-catering lodge and a four-star hotel are assessed differently: do not assume identical facilities or service. If a lodge is graded as self-catering rather than a hotel, label it clearly in a separate lodges section. Do not include unrated, one-, two- or three-star properties or assign a rating based on appearance.
Manor-house and country-house hotels
Historic houses and landscaped estates can offer countryside stays, dining and space to relax. Ask about stairs, lifts, room locations and access before booking; historic buildings may have practical limitations. Check whether spa, pool and grounds access are included.
Lodge-style hotels and lodges
Explore lodge-style hotels and separately graded four or five-star lodges where a recognised current grading can be checked. Establish whether you are booking hotel accommodation or self-catering, whether housekeeping and meals are included, and how far the lodge is from the main reception or facilities.
City and town-centre hotels
Central hotels may suit theatre trips, shopping, work or sightseeing. Check the actual address, nearby transport, parking fees and walking distances. “Near the centre” does not always mean within easy walking distance. Ask about room noise and step-free access if relevant.
Coastal, spa and resort stays
For seaside, countryside and spa breaks, confirm which facilities are available for your dates. Ask about treatments, pool times, age restrictions, seasonal closures and additional charges. A hotel star rating does not promise every facility you personally need.

Official information about accommodation grading.
For England and Scotland use current inspected AA listings and official property websites to verify individual hotel ratings. These external websites are not filtered exclusively to four- and five-star hotels.
Link-check note, 3 October 2026: AA RatedTrips and Discover Northern Ireland blocked automated viewing during our checks. This is an access restriction, not a confirmed broken link. Use the official links to recheck the current rating before booking.
A starting selection across the UK
This is a starting selection, not a complete national directory or an endorsement. Ratings relate to the named accommodation and category, not every property at a resort. Check current grading and booking details directly before paying.
Source-check limits: the Welsh entries and Hawthorn Lodge were checked directly on current Visit Wales listings. AA and Tourism NI grades below are supported by their indexed official listings; their live pages could not be read during the automated check. They are listed grades, not a guarantee of current grading. The Balmoral's source is an AA results page, and the Northern Ireland source is Tourism NI's luxury-accommodation guide; find the named hotel on each page.

Before booking
Confirm dates, room type, number of guests, breakfast, parking, deposits and the total price including taxes and extras. Check cancellation deadlines, refund terms and whether a payment is refundable. Confirm spa bookings, dinner reservations and any special requests in writing. Compare the hotel’s official website with other offers and read the terms for each rate.
Accessibility and personal needs
Ask the hotel directly about step-free routes, lifts, accessible bathrooms, room dimensions, assistance dogs, hearing support and dietary needs. A four or five-star rating does not guarantee accessibility. For families, confirm child policies, connecting rooms and facilities; for pets, check permitted areas and charges.
Location and getting there
Check rail connections, transfers, parking and how far the property is from the places you want to visit. Country hotels and lodges may need a car or pre-booked transport. Confirm arrival times and arrangements for late check-in.
If your stay does not match the booking
Raise the problem with reception promptly and keep your confirmation, receipts and relevant photographs. Ask for the hotel's complaint process. If the issue concerns an advertised grading, contact the rating organisation through its official website.
