Restaurants and Dining Out Across the UK

A waiter serving a meal to diners seated at tables in an attractive restaurant.

This guide is about sit-down restaurants with table service across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It covers Chinese, Indian, Thai, Japanese and other Asian cuisines, as well as American, British, Italian, French, Mediterranean and other international cuisines. It does not cover takeaways or fast-food outlets.

Choose what suits you

A restaurant may suit one person and not another. Compare the menu, total cost, location, recent customer experiences and practical arrangements that matter to you. Sixpence Support UK does not recommend or approve individual restaurants.

Search and compare

Finding a sit-down restaurant

Search by town, postcode, cuisine and date. Commercial services can help you discover restaurants and see whether online booking is available:

These are commercial services, not official registers. A listing or good review is not an endorsement from Sixpence Support UK and does not replace an official food hygiene check.

Read recent reviews carefully

  • Look at several recent reviews rather than relying only on the overall score.
  • Check whether comments relate to the branch you plan to visit.
  • Notice repeated comments about service, access, noise, waiting times or unexpected charges.
  • Confirm important details with the restaurant because listings and reviews can be out of date.
Ask direct questions

Dietary requirements and food allergies

Menus may mark vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free choices, but symbols alone may not answer every question. Ask about ingredients, preparation and possible cross-contact if this matters to you.

Tell the restaurant about allergies

If you have a food allergy, contact the restaurant directly before booking and explain what you need. Ask again when ordering so the staff dealing with your meal know. Do not rely only on a search filter, review, menu symbol or booking note.

Restaurants must provide allergen information, but they do not have to offer a meal that is suitable for every allergy. If staff cannot answer your questions clearly, choose another option.

Read the official GOV.UK guide to allergen information in restaurants. Requirements can be complex, so discuss your own needs with the restaurant rather than assuming that a dish labelled vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free is suitable for a particular allergy.

Check the whole visit

Wheelchair access and other access needs

An online label saying “accessible” may not describe the entrance, route to the table, toilet or available space. Contact the restaurant and ask about the details you need.

  • Is there a step-free entrance, or a safe alternative entrance that will be open?
  • Is there enough clear space for your wheelchair or mobility aid at the table?
  • Is there an accessible toilet, and is the route to it step-free and unobstructed?
  • Can the restaurant reserve suitable seating away from stairs, high stools or narrow routes?
  • Is there accessible parking or a nearby drop-off point?
  • Can menus be provided in large print or explained clearly?
  • Can lighting, noise or seating be discussed if you have sensory or communication needs?

Not every restaurant can provide every adjustment. Confirm essential arrangements before travelling.

Plan for your group

Family dining and special occasions

For family meals, ask whether there is a children's menu, suitable seating, space for a pushchair and baby-changing facilities. Check any age restrictions for later bookings or particular dining areas.

For birthdays, anniversaries or larger groups, ask about set menus, pre-orders, deposits, cake policies, decorations, table arrangements and how the bill will be handled. Do not assume that a request written in a booking note has been agreed; ask for confirmation.

Choose a time that works for everyone

Consider noise levels, waiting time, transport home, medication or dietary routines, children's needs and how long the meal may last. An earlier or quieter sitting may suit some groups better.

Use the official service

Checking food hygiene ratings across the UK

Food hygiene ratings reflect hygiene standards found during an inspection. They do not rate taste, service or value, and they are a snapshot at the time of inspection.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Use the Food Standards Agency's Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. It uses a scale from 0 to 5. Displaying the rating is required in Wales and Northern Ireland but voluntary in England, so check online rather than relying only on a sticker at the premises.

Search official food hygiene ratings

Scotland

Scotland uses the separate Food Hygiene Information Scheme, with results such as “Pass” or “Improvement Required”. Use Food Standards Scotland for the current information.

Understand the terms

Deposits, cancellations and service charges

Before entering card details or paying a deposit, read the restaurant's terms and ask what happens if plans change.

  • Check the deposit per person, whether it comes off the final bill and when it becomes non-refundable.
  • Ask how much notice is needed to cancel, reduce the group size or move the booking.
  • Check whether a late cancellation or no-show charge may be taken from your card.
  • Look for compulsory minimum spends, set menus or room-hire charges for groups.
  • Check whether a service charge has been added and whether the menu describes it as discretionary or compulsory.
  • Ask before paying if the bill is unclear or you think something has been charged twice.

Keep written terms, receipts and messages about any agreed change.

Final checks

Before you go

  • Confirm the address, booking time, party size and name on the reservation.
  • Check the current menu, likely total cost and payment methods.
  • Repeat any allergy, dietary or access arrangements directly with the restaurant.
  • Allow time for travel and check how you will get home.
  • Keep the restaurant's telephone number and booking confirmation available.
