National finders that cover the UK
These directories can help you find local social activities, but none of them lists every club. Rules about joining, age, cost and accessibility are set by each organiser, and the directories list local activities with varying arrangements.
- Age UK — social activities — find social activities offered through local Age UK organisations. What is available depends on your area, and each local service sets its own arrangements.
- Royal Voluntary Service — social activities — social groups, clubs and activities in many areas. Availability varies by location; check what runs near you.
- ABLEize — disabled groups and clubs by county — a county-by-county directory of disability clubs and groups, useful for finding something local in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Membership-based options: u3a and Meetup
Some well-known ways to find groups involve membership or joining rules. Read the organisation's own current terms before signing up.
- u3a — find local u3as — u3a is a membership organisation, mainly for people no longer in full-time work, with local groups running interest and activity sessions. Joining a local u3a normally means paying its membership fee; each local u3a sets its own fee and rules.
- Meetup — United Kingdom — lists local groups and events across many interests. Individual Meetup groups and events may have their own joining rules, and organisers can charge fees. Check each group's page for its current arrangements before attending.
England
Use the national finders above and search by your town or postcode. Local councils, libraries and community centres also publicise social clubs, lunch clubs and activity groups in their area.
Scotland
The same national directories include Scottish entries, and ABLEize lists Scottish clubs by county. Your local council and community centres can point you to groups running nearby.
Wales
The national finders above cover Wales, and ABLEize lists Welsh clubs by county. Local councils, libraries and community centres often publish details of social and activity groups.
Northern Ireland
Check the national directories for Northern Ireland listings, including ABLEize's county pages. Local councils and community organisations also share information about social clubs and groups.
Questions to ask before joining
- Is membership required, and what does it currently cost?
- When and where does the group meet, and is that still up to date?
- Is there a charge per session, or any other cost?
- Is the venue step-free, with accessible toilets and suitable seating?
- Can a friend, family member or carer come with you?
- Are there age limits or other joining rules?
